This will be one of my longer blog posts, and I assure you it will be worth your time!

In today's US society, it's common for both partners in a marriage to work, even when they have children. Finances in marriage can determine a couple's success, making financial compatibility just as crucial as the physical and emotional aspects of a relationship.

I absolutely love this article on RocketMoney.com that discusses the most common financial challenges married couples encounter, along with 10 tips for managing marriage finances. While not everyone is married, this isn't just for families—it's for independent individuals as well.

I'm here to present a solution for families and individuals that effectively alleviates the burden of managing day-to-day finances, allowing you to focus on what truly matters. Let's consider a common American task: landscaping. A significant 78% of U.S. adults have a lawn or landscaping, and of those, 44% hire professionals for lawn care services. This means nearly half of property owners with lawns choose to outsource this task. Why? Because people prefer to spend their time on other activities. Even more revealing is that nearly 69% of Americans with a lawn or landscape acknowledge that their lawns could use improvement, despite their confidence and knowledge. According to findings from NALP’s latest consumer research, while lawns are popular and homeowners invest effort in their upkeep, many still fall short in maintaining their yards. Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for NALP, highlights the crucial role lawn care experts play in managing and maintaining yards and green spaces to ensure they remain healthy and environmentally beneficial.

I'm not here to discuss landscaping, but I want to draw a comparison. If so many Americans outsource the simple task of cutting and maintaining their grass, why don't we do the same for something as crucial as organizing our personal finances? The answer isn't clear, but it's certainly worth serious consideration. Here's why:

The 2024 TIAA Institute–GFLEC Personal Finance Index demonstrates that U.S. adults, on average, correctly answer just 48% of basic financial questions. This measure emphasizes actual knowledge instead of perceived understanding. Additionally, other sources provide insight into Americans' perceptions of their financial literacy.

A Pew Research Center survey from December 2024 reveals that about half of Americans confidently state they possess at least a fair amount of knowledge about personal finances.

An Ipsos poll conducted in April 2022 indicates that the average American rates their financial literacy at 6.2 out of 10.

In the 2024 National Foundation for Credit Counseling Financial Literacy Survey, 47% of US adults confidently assessed their personal finance knowledge as "C" or worse.

A 2024 survey from Moneyzine revealed that 60% of respondents believe they are somewhat financially literate, with 29% considering themselves very financially literate, while only 10% acknowledge a lack of financial literacy.

It's crucial to recognize that self-perceived understanding doesn't always match actual knowledge. A World Economic Forum article cited a Cambridge University paper highlighting a gap between survey respondents' self-rated financial knowledge (5.1 out of 7) and their actual performance on a financial literacy test (under 30% correct responses).

Thus, while many Americans are confident in their understanding of personal finance, evidence suggests a significant knowledge gap persists.

Pennywise Solutions is here to streamline your personal or household finances, just like maintaining a pristine lawn. Let us expertly manage your finances, akin to how a bookkeeper handles business accounts. We provide you with a Quicken subscription for approximately $5 per month, enabling seamless connection of your bank accounts to your Quicken account, where transactions download automatically. I will categorize each transaction, assigning labels such as dining out, car expenses, insurance, medical, mortgage, or rent. This organization allows us to compare your spending to the budget we create together each month.

I know what you're thinking, "did you say budget"? Yes you need a budget, and here's why: establishing one offers a clear financial roadmap, maximizing your chances for financial success while reducing stress. Your monthly financial analysis report will reveal your savings and cash flow, allowing us to make necessary adjustments based on your goals.

I will also reconcile your bank accounts monthly. Reconciling involves comparing your bank statements with your records to ensure all transactions are accounted for and balances match. In today's digital age, many overlook this crucial step, but it's essential! Here's why: reconciling ensures accuracy and financial peace of mind. Let us handle it for you.

Reconciling bank accounts monthly is crucial for both individuals and businesses because:

  • Identify Errors and Fraud: It effectively detects discrepancies, including data entry mistakes, bank errors, or unauthorized transactions.

  • Accurate Financial Records: Guarantees that your financial records are current and dependable for budgeting, tax reporting, and other financial decisions.

  • Better Cash Flow Management: Offers a precise view of your cash position, enabling you to avoid overdrafts and manage your funds efficiently.

  • Peace of Mind: Ensures your accounts are accurate, reducing financial stress and enhancing confidence in your financial situation.

Before we dive any deeper, take a moment to ask yourself these two things: First, are you actually peeking at that bulleted list of items every month, or is it just gathering digital dust? Second, isn't it just plain genius to actually do it?

Let's discuss receipt and document management. In today's digital age, many receipts arrive via email or text, but how are you handling them? Do they get lost in your inbox? Perhaps you have a dedicated folder, yet still struggle to locate what you need. You might often wonder, "Do I really need to keep this?" The answer is frequently yes, and here's why. Consider this: who handles your taxes? Everyone needs to file taxes, right? Even if you do them yourself, you often search for receipts for work-related purchases that are tax-deductible, or for prescriptions that qualify as medical expense write-offs.

Now, think about this scenario: you have a septic system that you clean every two or three years. When you call to schedule a cleaning, the price seems to have increased significantly. Wouldn't it be convenient to quickly find the previous invoice or receipt to compare prices and potentially find a more cost-effective option? Or when you buy a pair of shoes that don't fit, and you can't locate the order confirmation email? You get the idea.

What I offer is to relieve you of the burden of storing all your invoices and receipts. Each month, simply scan your physical receipts and send them to me. Forward your email and digital receipts as well, and I will store and organize them for you. You'll have access to a personal, secure, and encrypted shared folder where you can easily find your neatly organized documents whenever needed.

Finally, let's address your bill payments. Who even uses checks these days? While the practice is almost obsolete, it's perfectly fine if you still do. I'm here to assist you with paying your bills. If you're tired of forgetting or accidentally double-paying, I'm your solution. Allow me to manage it for you. Whether you're spending time with family and friends, working, or on vacation, I'll handle your finances so you don't have to think about it.

So let's recap on what solutions I'm offering you here:

  • Transaction management

  • Budget creation and monthly analysis

  • Receipt/document management

  • Bill payment service

  • Monthly reporting

Are you juggling all these tasks solo right now? Probably, but you're staring at them like you shouldn't be, right? Let me and my trusty team swoop in to save the day!

Here's a little something I'd like to toss your way. If this whole spiel tickles your fancy even a smidge, I've got a challenge for you. Fire up Google and hunt down businesses that offer personal finance bookkeeping. Go on, I'll be right here twiddling my thumbs...

Back already? Didn't find anyone, huh? If you did, please spill the beans because I scoured the internet like a detective on a caffeine high and came up empty.

The thing is, there are barely any companies offering this service because they're all chasing after the big fish with fat wallets. They're not interested in helping regular folks, and that's where I waltz in, stage left. I want to work with everyday people and small businesses. That's where my heart does a happy dance.
